Washington— Vice President Kamala Harris has become one of President Joe Biden’s staunchest defenders and the person with the greatest support to succeed him on the ticket if he steps down in the week following his poor debate performance.

Seven sources told NBC News that although Harris is focusing on developing trust in Biden, her close friends are making it clear that she would have party-wide support if she takes the lead. Allies, including some Black Democrats, have stated they will fight any move to replace her this year.

“I think she’s done very well on her feet,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, who supports Biden as the party’s nominee but won’t overlook Harris if Biden drops out. “She’s always good. I believe she’s better. I think she’s better than any of the names being discussed.”

Sharpton, a civil rights crusader and MSNBC anchor, said he had “no doubt” that anybody wanting to remove Harris, the first woman, Black person, and South Asian vice president, is “racist and misogynist.”

“If anyone tried it, they better know I’m on the tracks to block the train from going ahead,” Sharpton stated of any attempt to make someone else the top ticket. “Voters chose the Biden-Harris ticket when they chose Biden. How are you going to separate and open that ticket? No justification. The calculation is ‘We can do this because she’s a woman and Black.’ Well, Blacks and women shouldn’t accept that calculation.”

Harris vigorously defended Biden on television minutes after the debate. Harris had little time to prepare and no campaign talking points, according to three people.

Democrats created a defence strategy for Biden after her CNN statement: “I’m not going to spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I’ve been watching the last 3½ years of performance.”

After she accused former President Donald Trump of spreading “lies” and causing “damage across the country” and declared her intent to defeat him in November, Democrats followed suit.

Harris’ ability to rapidly respond to queries about Biden’s enthusiasm and aptitude for a second term has helped quell years of criticism, including worries about her administration performance and presidential viability. Her interviews have been used by the Biden campaign to defend the president, and other Democrats have discreetly cited her performance as proof that she should be the party’s nominee if Biden drops out.

Four sources who spoke directly with Harris in the past week said Harris has been receiving and making calls to dozens of party leaders, civil rights activists, and donors to reassure them about Biden as the nominee and help unify the party. Harris has said in those talks that she is devoted to Biden and that he has overcome difficult times, including the 2020 contests.

Harris has declared, “We are ready for this fight,” according to a source. Stay optimistic. Head down. We have a lot of work, so let’s execute.”

Biden and Harris gave identical sentiments in an all-staff call with their campaign team on Wednesday.

“We will not back down,” Harris added. “We will follow our president. We will fight and win. Joe Biden has fought for Americans his whole life. I know we’re ready to battle for him now.”

Democratic political consultant Leah Daughtry, close to Harris’ office, agreed that Democrats must overcome Trump.

“President Biden had a bad night,” Daughtry remarked. In my perspective, ignoring his efforts over the past 3½ years and the results he has achieved while his presidency is merciless and astounding.

According to two individuals who requested anonymity, Harris and her senior leadership have constantly told staffers to back Biden as the head of the ticket and not discuss changing him.

Donna Brazile, a former Democratic National Committee chair and seasoned political strategist, called removing Biden on the ticket “an attack on the democratic process” and “utter nonsense.”

“How can we say we’re the party to strengthen democracy and overturn the American people’s will?” Brazile said. “So none of us delegates are even having this conversation.”
