The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was requested by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday to provide its “complete evidentiary file” about the closed investigation into the suspected sex trafficking of a minor girl by Matt Gaetz, who President-elect Donald Trump has appointed to the position of United States Attorney General.

The request was made by the Democratic majority of the committee in a letter to the Director of the FBI, Chris Wray. The letter states that “the grave public allegations against Mr. Gaetz speak directly to his fitness to serve as the chief law enforcement officer for the federal government.”

According to the letter that was received by NBC News, it was mentioned that Joel Greenberg, who had previously been associated with Gaetz, entered a guilty plea in 2021 “to the sex trafficking charge for which Mr. Gaetz was also investigated.”

“The Senate has a constitutional duty to provide advice and consent on presidential nominees, and it is crucial that we review all the information necessary to fulfill this duty as we consider Mr. Gaetz’s nomination,” the letter states. “It is crucial that we review all of the appropriate information in order to fulfill this duty.”

In his statement, Gaetz denied any misconduct.
