LONDON — As part of its expansion of its cloud computing initiatives in the United Kingdom, Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud division of the U.S. e-commerce behemoth, has declared its intention to allocate £8 billion ($10.45 billion) over the following five years to the building and maintenance of data centers in the country.

As cloud actors tout the advantages of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and companies endeavor to incorporate the technology into their operations, the investment was disclosed on Wednesday morning, London time.

In an interview with CNBC, Tanuja Randery, managing director for European, Middle East, and Africa at AWS, stated, “We have observed a significant increase in the adoption of cloud computing and AI technology by British businesses, and we are aware that the United Kingdom has a highly ambitious digital strategy.”

“This will assist our customers in effectively utilizing cloud computing, as the data centers are essential for the provision of cloud computing services to our customers.”

Randery stated that generative AI is “possibly the most transformative technology we have seen, possibly since the cloud and the internet,” and that businesses are currently conducting trials of the emerging technology.

“We have also observed that businesses are considering this in terms of revenue growth, employee productivity, and the ability to compete on a global scale, which is critically important, as you are aware.”

In order to train and operate AI models, AWS, in conjunction with other cloud providers, has been making substantial investments in infrastructure, including data centers and Nvidia processors. Subsequently, these cloud providers offer AI services to enterprises.

In the United Kingdom, AWS is in competition with Microsoft and Google, and its investment is indicative of the company’s dedication to expanding in Europe. AWS has announced that it intends to allocate 8.8 billion euros to the expansion of its existing cloud infrastructure in Germany this year.

However, this investment is also occurring at a time when regulators in the United Kingdom are conducting a thorough examination of the cloud market, with AWS and Microsoft being the primary targets. The U.K. cloud market is presently under investigation by the Competitions and Markets Authority.

Randery stated that AWS is “collaborating with the CMA in a very constructive manner,” but that authorities must strike a balance between regulation and innovation.

Randery stated to CNBC, “We have collaborated extensively with governments and regulators worldwide. We are of the opinion that regulation is crucial, but it must remain conducive to innovation.”
