If you’ve pressed and held the power button on your Android phone lately and got Gemini instead of the Google Assistant you’re used to, you’re not imagining it. And if you then went digging in the Gemini app to switch back to Google Assistant, here’s what’s new: for a lot of people, that option is gone.
Google has been moving Assistant off mobile for a long time. What changed this week is that the way back is closing. So let’s separate three things: what Google has said, what reporters and users have seen, and what nobody can say yet.

What Google actually announced
Google emailed Assistant users on August 4 to say Assistant was being discontinued on mobile and that Gemini is now the assistant experience on Android, according to 9to5Google’s report on the email. Removal was set to start in early September (9to5Google’s report of the email gave September 4, while other coverage says the change became mandatory on September 3 and 4) and, in Google’s words as reported, could take a few weeks to reach everyone. The notice also said that once removal reaches your device, you can no longer “use or switch back to Google Assistant” on your phone, tablet or paired devices.
This has slipped before. The shutdown was first planned for the end of 2025 and later pushed into 2026.
What has been reported since
On September 28, 9to5Google reported that the rollout now looks widespread. The site said Assistant was gone on every device and account it checked in the US and Europe, and that the “Switch to Google Assistant” shortcut had vanished from the Gemini app’s account menu on Google app versions 17.60 (stable) and 17.62 (beta).
Keep the source in mind here. Google’s email is the official part. The version numbers and the “gone everywhere we looked” finding come from a publication’s own checks and from user reports, not from a Google statement.
Who is affected, and what is still unclear
Going by Google’s notice as quoted by 9to5Google, the removal covers Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and vehicles running Android Auto projected from your phone.
What we can’t say is that every Android user has already lost Assistant today. Google itself said rollout could take weeks, and the change depends on the update reaching your device. If you can still see the switch option on your phone, that probably means your update hasn’t landed yet. It doesn’t mean you’ve been spared.
One more detail worth knowing. Google’s own Gemini Apps Help page still lists the steps for switching from Gemini to Google Assistant, even though reports say that option has disappeared for people the rollout has reached. Google hasn’t explained the mismatch. So if a guide online, including one from Google, doesn’t match what your phone shows, that’s the reason to be careful.
Nest and Google Home speakers: unchanged, for now
Google’s August notice was about mobile. 9to5Google notes there are no changes yet to Assistant on Nest and Google Home speakers, displays, or other Assistant-enabled speakers and displays. So your kitchen speaker may still answer to Assistant while your phone answers to Gemini. That’s an odd split.
It may not last. Google has said Gemini is coming to Google TV devices and to Google Home speakers and smart displays, though we haven’t seen dates. Treat “unchanged” as “unchanged for now.”
Android Auto vs. cars with Google built-in
These two get mixed up all the time, and Google treats them differently.
Android Auto means your phone runs the show and projects onto the car’s screen. If you have to plug in or connect your phone to get maps and music on the dash, that’s Android Auto. Google’s notice covers it, so Gemini takes over there.
Google built-in means the car itself runs Google’s software, with no phone required. For those cars, Google said Assistant will keep working past that early-September cutoff. Nothing we found says how long that will last, so we’d avoid promising anyone it’s permanent.

What users miss about Google Assistant
This section is early user reports and opinion, not a confirmed Google feature list, and we haven’t run side-by-side tests.
Yahoo Tech reports that Assistant handled some offline commands the Gemini app doesn’t, and that some users are unhappy with Gemini giving wrong answers to simple questions. Softonic says plenty of users think Assistant did everyday jobs better, like smart home control, routines, timers, calls and messages, while Gemini is stronger at summaries, brainstorming and drafting.
Google’s own line is that Gemini is its next-generation assistant, and it says it’s confident Gemini will be more capable. Google is putting Gemini into more of its products, including the Gemini-focused Googlebook, so this is the direction, not a one-off. What to do if you can’t switch back to Google Assistant
Google’s notice says there’s no switching back once removal reaches your device, so this is mostly about making the transition less annoying.
- Update the Google app and test your usual commands. Try the five things you actually say every day: timers, alarms, calling, texting, a smart home command. You’ll find out fast which ones break.
- Skip the “trick to get Assistant back” guides. Google says there’s no way back, and unofficial fixes usually mean installing software from places you shouldn’t.
- Lean on your speaker for the home. If you have a Nest or Google Home device, it still runs Assistant for now, so it can carry your smart home commands while you see how Gemini does on your phone.
- Send feedback when Gemini fumbles something. That’s the one lever regular users have.
- Check your Gemini activity. Google’s Help pages say your Gemini Apps Activity can be reviewed and deleted at any time. It’s worth a look now that Gemini handles your voice requests.
