Detailed news

Jaime Harrison, the Chair of the Democratic National Committee, announced on Friday that Vice President Kamala Harris has earned sufficient delegate votes to secure the Democratic presidential nomination. However, the results are not yet official.

The DNC will not release an official announcement of the results until Monday evening, when the virtual voting process for delegates to the Democratic National Convention next month concludes.

On a call with supporters coordinated by her campaign, Harris stated, “I will officially accept your nomination next week, once the virtual voting process is closed. However, I am pleased to know that we have sufficient delegates to secure the nomination.” Harrison made the announcement during the call.

Harris would become the first Black woman and the first Indian American in American history to secure the presidential nomination of a major party.

In order to conclude their nomination prior to the ballot access deadline in Ohio next week, Democratic delegates are conducting an unconventional pre-convention virtual vote. This deadline was established prior to the commencement of the party’s national convention in Chicago on August 19. They had been preparing to formally select their presidential candidate in this manner since May, well before Biden withdrew his re-election bid.

After President Joe Biden withdrew his re-election bid and endorsed Harris last month, she is currently competing unopposed for the Democratic nomination. The Democrats implemented a new, expedited nomination process that enabled additional candidates to participate. However, no significant Democrats submitted nomination papers, and the unknown candidates who submitted them were unable to garner sufficient support to qualify for the internal ballot.
