New York’s Sag Harbour Justin Timberlake was arrested early Tuesday for DUI in a Hamptons neighbourhood. Police say he swerved out of his lane and failed to stop at a stop sign in the wealthy beachfront tourist getaway.
The former boy band member turned successful solo artist and actor was pulled over by an officer in Sag Harbour at 12:30 a.m., according to a court filing. DUI was determined by the officer.
According to court documents, the subject had bloodshot and glassy eyes, a distinct alcohol smell on their breath, difficulties focusing, sluggish speech, shaky mobility and poor performance on standardised field sobriety tests.
Timberlake, 43, told the police he had one martini and was just with pals back home, according to the records. He refused a breath test after his arrest and transport to an East Hampton police station, court filings show. The papers listed him as self-employed and “professional.”
Later Tuesday morning, the 10-time Grammy winner was arraigned in Sag Harbour and released without bond. The Suffolk County district attorney’s office said the driver was scheduled to appear in court on July 26 for DUI charges.
On Tuesday, Timberlake’s local lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., declined to comment but confirmed that the star is not obligated to attend his court date. Multiple efforts for response from Timberlake’s California agents were ignored on Tuesday.
The arrest brought curious tourists to the village’s picturesque Main Street, where many took photos in front of the brick municipal building all day.
Billy Joel, who owns a Sag Harbour residence, saw the scene outside the American Hotel, a prominent bar near to the courthouse where Timberlake was seen before his arrest.
“Judge not lest ye be judged,” the “Piano Man” singer told WPIX, not commenting on Timberlake or his arrest.
Like Britney Spears, Timberlake began his career as a Disney Mouseketeer. NSYNC made him famous, and in 2002, he launched a successful solo career and became a pop music star.
He wrote Grammy-winning songs including “Cry Me A River,” “SexyBack,” “What Goes Around…Comes Around,” and “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” with a profound understanding of pop and R&B. He performed at several Super Bowl halftime shows, including the 2004 incident where he accidently revealed Janet Jackson’s bare nipple.
The episode prevented Jackson from appearing on the Grammys a week later. She revealed in a 2022 documentary that the incident was inadvertent and that she and Timberlake remain friends.
Timberlake has also acted, winning four Primetime Emmys for “The Social Network” and “Friends With Benefits”.
Timberlake was in the spotlight last year when Spears published “The Woman in Me.” Several chapters covered their relationship, including a pregnancy, abortion, and rough breakup. After six years, he released “Everything I Thought It Was,” his long-awaited record, in March. The record brings back memories with his future funk vibe.
Timberlake will headline at Madison Square Garden later this month after two fantastic Chicago gigs this weekend.
Sag Harbour, a settlement from Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick,” located in the Hamptons, 100 miles (160 km) east of New York City. The Hamptons have long attracted celebrities and powerful people, many of whom have had legal troubles there.
Sag Harbour’s bayside location has historically distinguished it from its more affluent beachfront neighbours. Locals hang out at the Corner Bar, not a country club. The lovely, cosy 1800s hotel and a long-standing store are popular gathering places.
Joel, former CNN host Don Lemon, Nobel Prize-winning novelist John Steinbeck, feminist writer Betty Friedan, and Pulitzer Prize winners Colson Whitehead and Lanford Wilson are among the village’s noteworthy residents. Whitehead’s novel “Sag Harbour” takes place in a coastal neighbourhood where Black families have spent summers for decades.
Sag Harbour has grown in prominence with celebrities, aspiring persons, and cruise ships. Luxury restaurants and stores have increased significantly. Long-term residents are concerned about the increasing traffic, congestion, and village atmosphere as properties sell for millions.
