Is Meta AI private? Not the way a message to a friend is. Since December 16, 2025, Meta has used your chats with Meta AI as one more signal for the ads and posts it shows you across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Some of that you can steer, and some of it you cannot switch off.
It follows Meta’s own announcement and WhatsApp’s help pages, and is written for US readers. Meta changes these settings often, so treat the menu names below as a guide and check them on your own phone.
Quick answer: Meta says it uses your voice and text chats with Meta AI to personalize the ads and content you see, much as it uses your likes. It says it does not use sensitive topics such as health, religion or politics for ads. You can change the ads you see, but US users have no switch to stop their AI chats from being used this way, according to reporting as recent as September 2026. The safest habit is to keep private topics out of Meta AI and to reset the chats you have already had.
Is Meta AI Private? What Meta Says It Does With Your Chats

Meta announced the change on October 1, 2025, and it took effect on December 16, 2025. Meta’s example is simple. If you chat with Meta AI about hiking, it may learn that you like hiking, the same way it would if you liked a hiking page. You might then see hiking groups, posts about trails or ads for boots. It covers voice chats and text chats, and Meta said it was rolling out in most regions.
Nothing in the announcement says advertisers receive your conversations. Meta describes your chats as one more signal for personalization, like a like or a share. That is still a trade-off, because a chat with an assistant is usually more personal than a like.
Which Topics and Accounts Does It Affect?
Meta says it does not use Meta AI chats about religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership to show you ads.
Which accounts you link also matters. Meta uses your AI interactions across the accounts you have added to the same Accounts Center. If you have not added your WhatsApp account to it, Meta says your Meta AI chats on WhatsApp will not be used to personalize your other Meta accounts.
The announcement is about your interactions with Meta AI. It does not describe changes to your private messages with other people. Our guide to whether WhatsApp is really private covers what Meta can and cannot see there.
Can You Opt Out of Meta AI Using Your Chats for Ads?
Not completely, and for US readers, not at all as far as we can tell. Meta told reporters when it announced the change that there was no opt-out, and Engadget’s September 2026 report says US users still have none. Meta points to Ads Preferences and feed controls, which change the ads and posts you see. They do not stop Meta from using the chats in the first place. If Meta has added an opt-out since, its Privacy Center guide to AI at Meta is where it would appear.
The only sure way to keep a topic out of it is not to raise it with Meta AI. For other assistants, see our guide on how to stop AI chatbots from training on your data, and our guides to whether ChatGPT is private and whether Google Gemini is private.
5 Meta AI Privacy Settings to Check Today

- Keep private topics out of Meta AI. Health, money, legal trouble and family problems belong in a conversation with a person or a professional, not in a chatbot that feeds an ad system.
- Review your ad settings. Open Meta’s Ads Preferences help page and follow the steps for Facebook and Instagram. Choose less personalization where it is offered, and remove interests you do not want. This changes what you are shown. It does not stop Meta from using your chats.
- Check Accounts Center. Look at which accounts are linked. If you want your WhatsApp activity kept separate, think about whether it needs to be there, since Meta’s own wording says unlinked WhatsApp chats are not used across accounts.
- Delete Meta AI’s copy of your WhatsApp chats. WhatsApp’s help page says you can delete a chat with Meta AI at any time, that a deleted chat can’t be restored, and that you need a command to delete Meta AI’s copy of your messages and information. In the chat with Meta AI, type /reset-ai to reset that chat, or /reset-all-ais to reset every individual and group chat you have used Meta AI in. Meta AI is only available in some countries, so if you don’t see a Meta AI chat on your phone, there is nothing to reset.
- Turn on Restricted chat for sensitive chats. On the latest version of WhatsApp, Restricted chat replaces Advanced chat privacy. When it is on, people in that chat can’t use Meta AI features there, export the chat, or save its media automatically. It works one chat at a time. In a group, admins turn it on, and in a one-to-one chat either person can. Chats that already had Advanced chat privacy don’t switch over by themselves, and people on older versions of WhatsApp may still get around it with unofficial apps.
Menu names change between app versions, so look for these settings by name and check what your own phone shows. Facebook also began rolling out a new tool in October 2026, Your algorithm, which lets you tell Facebook in your own words what you want more or less of in Feed and Reels. It shapes recommendations and is not a privacy protection, so treat it as a convenience.
Is Meta AI Private? Your Questions Answered
Does Meta use my Meta AI chats for ads?
Yes, as Meta describes it. Meta has used your Meta AI chats to personalize ads and content since December 16, 2025, and it says sensitive topics such as health, religion and politics are not used for ads. It does not say that advertisers can read your chats.
Can Meta read my WhatsApp messages to friends?
The announcement covers your interactions with Meta AI, not your private messages with other people. WhatsApp says personal messages are always protected with end-to-end encryption, and that Meta AI can only access the messages people choose to send it, whether Restricted chat is on or off.
Does deleting my Meta AI chat delete everything?
Not on its own. WhatsApp says a deleted chat with Meta AI can’t be restored, but Meta AI’s copy of your messages and information takes a command to delete: /reset-ai for one chat or /reset-all-ais for all of them. WhatsApp also notes that Meta uses AI chats consistent with Meta’s Privacy Policy. We could not confirm whether a reset changes ad personalization already built from your past chats.
Check Your Settings Now
