For people who are new to pop singer Chappell Roan, it may seem like she’s become famous overnight. But tell that to the girl in the photo she shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 20 and to those of us who have loved her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, since it came out in 2023. Over the course of her hilarious chat with Jimmy Fallon, Roan talked about a picture of herself alone behind a keyboard on a small stage. “I had no money, and I was working at a doughnut shop,” she said.
Roan’s first performance on The Tonight Show was just a few weeks after her hugely popular performance at the Governor’s Ball in June. After her interview with Fallon, she performed her new song “Good Luck, Babe!” in a silly, feather-adorned way. Fallon then asked her, “What does it feel like to become a pop star overnight?”
Roan laughed, “It feels like I was right the whole time.” “Well, I guess I did make it when people came to my event a few years ago. “People came?!,” it was like. The cherry on top has been everything else.
Jim Fallon hears from Chappell Roan about Sasha Colby.
The singer told Roan, “I loved what you said at Coachella.” “You said, ‘I’m Chappell Roan, and I’m your favourite artists’ favourite artist.”
Roan said, “That was a reference to Sasha Colby.” He then added, “There are gay people here,” which got cheers from the crowd. She won Season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and became a big star in the drag world. Colby is known for saying, “I’m your favourite drag queens’ favourite drag queen.”
She told Fallon, “It hit me right in the heart.” “And so I was like, ‘I hope Sasha Colby one day watches me, and that’s why I said it.'”
Colby later posted the Tonight Show clip to Roan’s Instagram stories, so she got what she wanted.

Roan sang her hit song in Studio 6B on June 10 while covered in feathers from head to…nails.
Roan told Fallon that she and her stylist, Genesis Webb, get ideas for their looks from drag shows, scary movies, burlesque and the theatre. “I love being both pretty and scary.” Or something like pretty and tacky. Or just not pretty! “Yes, I love that too,” she said.
